BACKGROUND:
As a result of the South African Government’s LAND REFORM legislation, a large proportion of commercial farming land in the Levubu Valley was purchased by the Government on behalf of the local communities from the area. In an effort to ensure that the farms continue to produce economically in the years to come, the Government appointed management companies to manage the farms for a period of up to 10 years with the understanding that during this time there be adequate skills transfer from the management company to the local communities to necessitate sustainable farming once the communities take over.
As a natural progression, in 2008, the shareholders at Valley Farms Processing Co approached the Government with the offer to sell 75% shares in the processing facility to a new Black Economic Empowerment company comprising of all the local communities.
The original shareholders continue to own 25% of the company. Over the next 2 years the current management will perform management and skill transfers with the end goal being to transfer the remaining shares to the community to make the company 100% Black Empowerment.
The mission of this project is to enable these local communities to add value to their newly acquired farms with their own agro processing facility.
